Holly Rust and Brendan Traw will share the thrill of artisanally extracting world-class mineral specimens from Pacific Northwest localities, such as Spruce Ridge in King County Washington, and then preparing them to join the collections of mineral enthusiasts world-wide. Through a photographic narrative, they will share a year’s worth of activities involved in this process!
Coffee, tea, and dessert served at 4pm. Lecture to begin at 4:30pm.

THE GREAT THUNDEREGG HUNT

Participate in our EGG HUNT and take home a THUNDEREGG or a MYSTERY MINERAL!
In addition to the hunt, we’ll have uncut AND polished thundereggs for sale, thunderegg cutting, geode cracking, and more! This way you can still cut open a thunderegg even if you don’t find one in the hunt. : )
HOW IT WORKS:
- There will be 5 egg hunts, each lasting 30 minutes. You choose your timeslot when purchasing tickets.
- You can keep up to THREE plastic eggs, which then are redeemed for PRIZES (one per egg). Some will get thundereggs, others mystery minerals! Participants won’t know what they have won until they have redeemed their eggs.
- There is also ONE golden egg per round. Whoever finds the golden egg gets a special prize.
- A ticket reserves a spot in ONE timeslot, spend the rest of the day at the museum enjoying the activities and exploring the museum and grounds.
TICKET PRICES:
Egg hunt + event, museum and grounds admission: $25 adult, $15 child, $22.50 member adult, $13.50 member child
Event, museum and grounds admission, but no egg hunt: regular museum admission pricing, free for members

A ROCKHOUND’S GUIDE TO OREGON & WASHINGTON

A Rockhound’s Guide to Oregon & Washington, written by Alison Jean Cole, is a collection of 60 sites where you can explore ancient sea-floors, epic lava flows, glacier-carved landscapes, and evidence of 200 million years of tectonic action throughout the PNW. Discover agates and jaspers in the volcanic Cascade Range and marine fossils along the Oregon Coast. Search for concretions along the Olympic Peninsula, petrified wood in the Owyhee Uplands, and much more.
In addition to detailed information on where exactly to begin a rock hunt, every location features an overview of the area’s geologic history and age, what types of rocks are worth finding there, needed tools, land manager, and collection limits. Clear driving directions with GPS coordinates, road quality and trip safety information, best season to go, and an informative map round out each description.
Alison will sign books and chat with museum guests about her work, rockhounding with care, and has a demonstration that is excellent for beginning and experienced rockhounders alike!
