World Class Mineral: Petrified Wood

Local Favorite

One of the Rice Museum’s claims to fame is our petrified wood gallery, containing over 460 worldwide cross-cut slices, full rounds, limbs, pinecones, and tall tree trunks collected by Dennis and Mary Murphy over 40 years.
Petrified wood from Hampton Butte contains an unusual green coloration caused by localized reduction of iron. Specimens like this one really rock our world!
